Hurricane Dennis Blows Through Ala., Fla.

The tightly wound Dennis, which had been a Category 4, 145-mph monster as it marched up the Gulf of Mexico, weakened just before it struck less than 50 miles east of Ivan's landfall. And despite downed power lines and outages to more than 200,000, early reports indicated no deaths and relatively modest structural damage.

As of 3:30 C.S.T. Hurricane Dennis was downgraded to a category 2 hurricane with sustained winds of 105 MPH.

Dennis now inland

At 2:25 p.m. CDT, Dennis made landfall on Santa Rosa Island between Navarre Beach and Pensacola Beach as a Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds in the eyewall of 115 to 120 mph. The eye of the storm is swirling by Pensacola just to the east of the city. Destruction of coastal property in the region will be extensive. Water rise is expected to be in the 12-to-18-foot range. Buoys offshore reported waves as high as 35 feet earlier today.
Heavy rains and gusty winds from Dennis have pushed inland through southeastern Mississippi, the southern half of Alabama and the southern half of Georgia. Winds in the western Florida Panhandle are peaking now as the eye of the hurricane moves inland. Destin was being pounded by 74 mph gusts as of 2 p.m. CDT.

With at least 2,100 workers evacuated from shut offshore rigs and platforms, oil and natural gas producers watched Hurricane Dennis charge near production areas in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico on Sunday.
At least 42 percent of daily oil production and 27 percent of daily natural gas output were shut by the storm. The Gulf is home to 25 percent of U.S. oil and gas production, producing 1.5 million barrels of crude and about 10 billion cubic feet of natural gas daily.

Dennis hits coast with 120 mph winds 'Dangerous hurricane' moves ashore on Florida Panhandle

A slightly weakened Hurricane Dennis began pushing ashore with 120 mph winds Sunday afternoon, triggering tornado warnings across the western Florida Panhandle as it moved northward.
Despite a 15-mph dip in sustained wind speeds, Dennis remained a major Category 3 hurricane, the National Hurricane Center reported.
At 2 p.m. (3 p.m. ET), the storm's eye was about 20 miles east-southeast of Pensacola, the center reported. The wall -- its most destructive portion -- was beginning to hit land as it moved just west of due north at 17 mph, the center reported.
