Heavy rains and gusty winds from Dennis have pushed inland through southeastern Mississippi, the southern half of Alabama and the southern half of Georgia. Winds in the western Florida Panhandle are peaking now as the eye of the hurricane moves inland. Destin was being pounded by 74 mph gusts as of 2 p.m. CDT.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- The countdown for NASA's return to space was on track to begin Sunday, although Hurricane Dennis threatened to interfere with the liftoff of the first shuttle mission in more than two years.

At least 2,100 workers evacuated from Gulf rigs and platforms; no resumption expected until Monday. With at least 2,100 workers evacuated from shut offshore rigs and platforms, oil and natural gas producers watched Hurricane Dennis charge near production areas in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico on Sunday.
At least 42 percent of daily oil production and 27 percent of daily natural gas output were shut by the storm. The Gulf is home to 25 percent of U.S. oil and gas production, producing 1.5 million barrels of crude and about 10 billion cubic feet of natural gas daily.

Despite a 15-mph dip in sustained wind speeds, Dennis remained a major Category 3 hurricane, the National Hurricane Center reported.
At 2 p.m. (3 p.m. ET), the storm's eye was about 20 miles east-southeast of Pensacola, the center reported. The wall -- its most destructive portion -- was beginning to hit land as it moved just west of due north at 17 mph, the center reported.
Tornado warnings were issued for Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties in the far western Panhandle
